National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023

National Curriculum Framework for School Education - 2023

What is NCF 2023?

The National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023 (NCF-SE 2023) is an updated national guideline document that provides a foundational framework for curriculum design, pedagogy, assessment, and overall school education in India. It replaces previous framework versions and aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy 2020 to transform the school education system toward holistic, inclusive, and learner-centric education

The framework covers all stages of schooling from age 3 up to 18 years and provides broad guidelines for teachers, curriculum developers, boards, and schools to design curricula and learning environments.

Guiding Principles

NCF 2023 shifts emphasis from rote memorization to meaningful learning by:

  • Promoting holistic development — cognitive, emotional, physical, ethical, and socio-cultural growth.

  • Supporting inclusion and equity for diverse learners.

  • Encouraging critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.

  • Ensuring interdisciplinary learning and real-world connections across subjects.

  • Placing teachers at the centre of curriculum change with support for capacity building and contextualized implementation.

  • Structure of the Framework

The official NCF document is organized into five major parts:

    1. Part A – Aims of school education, values, skills, and the rationale for the new curriculum design aligned with NEP 2020.

    2. Part BCross-cutting themes such as rootedness in Indian culture, environmental education, inclusion, guidance & counselling, and educational technology.

    3. Part CSubject-wise learning standards with guidelines for content, pedagogy, and assessment at each stage of schooling; includes languages, mathematics, science, social science, arts, physical education, and vocational subjects.

    4. Part D – School culture and processes to foster positive learning environments.

    5. Part E – Requirements for an ecosystem of schooling, including teacher capacities, infrastructure, and community involvement.
